Okay, so everyone has a weakness. Chocolate, scary movies, soda... One of my many weaknesses is girly novels.
When It Happens is most likely a book you've read before. Well, maybe not the same exact book, but you've heard the story: guy is in love with girl, girl is with someone else, girl realizes other guy is better and they head off to college together. That's the gist of it anyway. Well, it may have been a totally 'been there done that' notion, but I was still able to detect some issues that were response worthy. The thing I'm elaborating on today is the fact that, when girls want to have a boyfriend or be in love, they will try to fool themselves into thinking that they want to go out with the first guy who gives them that opportunity.
I think it's sad that some girls feel the need to have a boyfriend, or do certain things with a guy just because everyone around them has one and they think it's the thing to do. Personally, I believe that is a blatant form of peer pressure, because even if the people around them aren't purposely telling them "you should have a boyfriend by this age" the idea is in the air. I think that it stems from television, where in practically every TV show or movie you turn on, at least one of the plot lines is that the female character is having trouble with her boyfriend, or wants a boyfriend, or is wondering how far to go with her boyfriend. It is portrayed by the media that part of having a full life is to be in a relationship.
Well, I think that that is just sad. I mean, if you have a crush on a guy and want to go out with him, go for it! But that's the way it should go, not you want to go out with someone, so you convince yourself that you have a crush on him. No! That's wrong, and backwards! Also, it will inevitably not work out, because if you had to manufacture the crush, then there was probably not much you two have in common, or even that much that you liked about him. Also, if you are following the plotlines of chick literature, you will then have to go find a cute, reject musician who is secretly in love with you and is your soulmate, and whom you will convince to go to college.
God I love girly novels.

ReplyDeleteI love this blog post!!!!!
It's funny, and its not only funny its creative. I mean you were able to connect a chick book (which I am sad to say I'm secretly in love with them) but you were able to connect it to real life. How you were able to connect it to the world we live in. And thats really nice, because I can't!!!!!! Anyway it was really nice to read your blog post.
I agree with you 100%. I agree with you because in school and everywhere somebody wants something because their best friend has it or their class mates have to be cool. I think that we should choose who we like and what we want when we what to. I guess we should live "freely" and do what we want to ( yet nothing inappropriate and wrong). We all have different likes and dislikes, so we shouldn't do something in order to be cool. We need to be unique and make our own decisions.
ReplyDeleteHey :) Thanks Chelsea! And Tasfia and Shaina, I totally agree with what you wrote! Peer pressure controls most of what we do, even if we aren't aware of it- i mean, that's what trends are, right? Peer Pressure? What do you guys think about trends?
ReplyDeleteThis is SO TRUE. It IS depressing that girls think they need a boyfriend- and yet we all go through it at one point. We have a crush. We see them with someone else. Or we watch too many movies (like me), and really just want someone who can give you what you see there. Like Romeo and Juliet- who WOULDN'T want that kind of romance? But it's not necessary.

I really like your blog post Joanna. It really made me think about peer pressure is in books we read everyday. Also I think trends are really silly. i mean why would you want to be wearing what everybody else is wearing. i think I'd rather run solo.
