In the song "Maybe This Time," from Cabaret, one of the lyrics is "everybody, they love a winner. So nobody loves me." Now, the context of this line is speaking about love, and the narrators multiple failed attempts at romance. However, there are many real life scenarios that this lyric could be applied to. In society, the rich are held to a certain standard- people may not like to acknowledge it, but they are. They are seen as special, privledged, and are treated as such. Now, this isn't very different from what the narrator was speaking of- in many walks of life there are people who seem to have it better than everyone else; whether it be in looks or in money, or relationship status or financial security. The truth remains in each scenario that for everything important in life, there is a quality that which, if one posseses it, will make it easier for them than everyone else.
Now, this brings up a certain bias that everyone holds. When she says "everybody loves a winner, so nobody loves me," she in essence refers to herself as the loser. Now, I wondered if it was true that in our society, the loser is always looked down on? Cut out? It doesn't matter what they lost at- maybe they're struggling financially, or maybe they weren't blessed with good looks. But when you see a homeless person on the street, is your first thought always "I wish I could help them," or, "That poor man/woman." Is it?
Liar.
Most people have grown up looking down on the loser with disdain, or maybe even fear. It's not a belief one came up with themself- it was taught to them by their guardian, and it was taught to your guardian by theirs. To avoid the losers of life, to avert your eyes, to fear them. Why? Is it possible that those who have found success are intimidated by those who haven't been as fortunate? Why is that?
Cabaret, nice, this made my day. Anyway, I think that people who are "losers" are thought of as being people you don't want to be around. Weather it is because they are dangerous or just because being with losers seems to make you feel like a loser. In some cases it can make people feel above the "loser" and feel good about themselves but most of the time people don't want to be associated with the losers. Our entire lives we try not to be losers.
ReplyDeleteNice points. This is very true and brings up some real life issues as well. People who aren't given gifts are put behind in life, and that should be changed. What about the normal people?
